Meet Michelle Martin, college professor and passionate advocate for literacy! She has co-created Camp Read-o-Rama, a program designed to help children of all backgrounds feel like readers. She focuses less on learning to read and more on the enjoyment of reading and strives to help kids experience and feel the books they read. She asks where is Blueberries for Sal for the black child? Many children have no concept of blueberry picking on a windswept island in Maine. She says, “Childhood doesn’t look the same across cultures, classes or races.”
